Part 1



Definition of Descriptive Text 

Descriptive Text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing. 


Generic Structure of Descriptive Text

When writing descriptive text, there are some generic structures (actually not mandatory) for our writing to be true. The arrangement is:

1. Identification: (contains about the introduction of a person, place, animal or object will be described.)

2. Description: contains a description of something such as animal, things, place or person by decribing its features, forms, colors, or anything related to what the writer describe.


Language Feature of Descriptive Text

1. Specific participant : has a certain object, is not common and unique (only one). for example: Bandengan beach, my house, Borobudur temple, uncle Jim 

2. The use of the adjective (an adjective) to clarify the noun, for example: a beautiful beach, a handsome man, the famous place in jepara, etc. 

3. The use of simple present tense: The sentence pattern used is simple present because it tells the fact of the object described. 

4. Action verb: verbs that show an activity (for example, run, sleep, walk, cut etc…. 


Example of Descriptive Text 

Lembah Pelangi Waterfall Lembah

Pelangi Waterfall sounds unfamiliar for either local or foreign tourists. Lembah Pelangi Waterfall is located in Sukamaju village, Ulubelu sub district, Tanggamus district, Lampung province, Indonesia. The access to this place is quite difficult because Ulu Belu sub district is a remote area in Lampung with its hilly contours which make this tourist spot elusive. 

Lembah Pelangi Waterfall has two levels where the waterfall on the second level has two branches. The height of the first level waterfall is about 100 meters, while the second level waterfall is about dozens of meters. The best enchantment of this waterfall is the rainbow which appears between the valley and the waterfall as the name suggests. The soft flowing gurgling waterfall sounds is like a chant of nature which can remove the tiredness of the long trip to go there. Under the waterfall, there are several spots of warm water which can be an interesting spot for bathing. 

In this place, you will be shown a panorama of natural beauty which is very interesting for every pair of eyes seeing it. Rocky hills accompanied by leafy trees will actually soothe both your eyes.

Borobudur Tample

Borobudur is the largest temple in Indonesia. Candi Borobudur is located in Magelang, Central Java, in addition to being a bustling tourist attraction, is also a center of worship for Buddhists in Indonesia, especially in every celebration of Vesak. This is consistent with the meaning of its name is “monastery in the hills”. Borobudur is currently designated as one of the UNESCO World Heritage.

Borobudur was built around 800 BC or 9th century. Borobudur was built by the followers of the Mahayana agamaBuddha during the reign of the Sailendra dynasty. This temple was built in the heyday of the Sailendra dynasty. Borobudur founder, King Samaratungga from dynastic or Sailendra dynasty. The possibility of this temple was built around 824 AD and was completed around the year 900 AD during the reign of Queen Pramudawardhani who is the daughter of Samaratungga. While the architects who contributed to build this temple according to the story of hereditary named Gunadharma.

The word Borobudur itself by first written evidence written by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the Governor General of Great Britain in Java, which gave the name of this temple. There is no written evidence that older who gave it the name Borobudur temple. The only documents that indicate the existence oldest temple is Nagarakretagama book, which was written by MPU Prapanca in 1365. In the book written that the temple was used as a place of Buddhist meditation.

The meaning of the name Borobudur “monastery in the hills”, which is derived from the word “bara” (temple or monastery) and “beduhur” (hills or high place) in Sanskrit. Therefore, in accordance with the meaning of the name Borobudur, then this place since it was used as a place of Buddhist worship.

This temple for centuries no longer used. Then because of volcanic eruptions, most of the buildings covered Borobudur volcanic soil. In addition, the building is covered with trees and shrubs for centuries. Then the building of this temple began to be forgotten in the days of Islam arrived in Indonesia around the 15th century.

In 1814 when the British occupied Indonesia, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles heard of the discovery of giant archaeological object in the village Bumisegoro Magelang. Due to the great interest the history of Java, then immediately ordered Raffles HC Cornelius, a Dutch engineer, to investigate the discovery of the location it is a hill covered with shrubs.

Cornelius assisted by about 200 men cut down trees and remove shrubs that covered the giant building. Because the building is already fragile and could collapse, then report to the Raffles Cornelius invention includes several images. Because of the discovery, Raffles was honored as the person who started the restoration of Borobudur and got the attention of the world. In 1835, the entire area of ​​the temple has been excavated. The temple continues restored the Dutch colonial period.

Example of Descriptive Text 

University of Indonesia Urban Forest

Located in South Jakarta and Depok which are densely populated cities, University of Indonesia area is a source of clean air. As much as 75% of the University of Indonesia area is a green area in the form of urban forest that has six large lakes whose acronyms form each word KAMPUS, which are K(enanga), A(ghatis), M(ahoni), P(uspa), U(Lin), and S(alam).

We can find this green area around Jalan Cinta, a road that stretches from University of Indonesia Student Dormitory to the Faculty of Engineering University of Indonesia. On Sunday, various groups of people come to this area to carry out sports activities, such as jogging or just walking to enjoy the fresh air around. There are also some bicycle communities that use this forest as their bicycle tracks. Two commonly used tracks are known as Mangkuk track and Nyamuk track. All recreational activities in this urban forest are free of charge, but visitors still have to maintain cleanliness and orderliness from the campus environment. Besides it functions as absorption area, this forest is also used as germplasm conservation and biodiversity research land in one of the best public universities in Indonesia. There are a number of tree species found in this urban forest, such as Jati, Meranti, Kopi, Karet, and Matoa.

The Amazing Jatim Park

or people in East Java, Jatim Park may have been heard many times as it is one of the famous tourism object in East Java province. Jatim Park offers a recreation place as well as a study center.

Jatim Park is located at Jl. Kartika 2 Batu, East Java. To reach the location is not too difficult because the object is only 2, 5 kilos meters from Batu city. This Jatim Park tourism object is about 22 hectares width.

Visitor can enjoy at least 36 kinds of facilities which can attract them as well as give new knowledge. Just after the pass gate, the visitors will find an interesting view of ‘Galeri Nusantara’ area. This study offering continues to step on ‘Taman Sejarah’ area, which contains of miniature temple in East Java like Sumberawan temple, customhouse of Kiai Hasan Besari Ponorogo and Sumberawan Statue.

The other facility which is able to be enjoyed is ‘Agro Park’ area. It presents crop and rareness fruits, animal diorama which consists of unique animals that have been conserved, and supporting games like bowling, throw ball, scooter disco, etc

Jatim Park is suitable for family and school recreation. The recreation area sites offer precious tour and can used as alternative media of study.

He was born on June 9, 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky, U.S. He started his career on movie in 1984. His first movie is A Nightmare on Elm Street. Before he became a famous actor, Depp was a musician. The first genre he played was rock music. He is good in playing guitar and writing songs. A long his life, he wrote so many songs for bands, solo vocalist and for Sweeney Todd movie.
